— The Brief
STOP NZ has a mission to help young people in New Zealand understand sexual behaviours they see every day. The way to do this? Teach the adults around them how to take about it. Introducing Press Pause - an online tool designed for adults to help support young people by explaining a range of issues they might come across (sexual imagery, boundaries and more).
It will be no surprise: talking about sexual behaviours can be awkward at the best of times. But explaining it to young teenagers? Even harder. We needed something that was both technically correct, but accessible and fun. Our team designed a brand, drew an illustration system, wrote technical copy and built a website which took the adults through definitions, explanations and exercises they could then use in every day life.

Throughout the process, my focus was for our working environment to feel safe, just as much as productive. While we were creating a product that needed to be fun and accessible, it was also sensitive topic that could be triggering, or hard to navigate. Everyone involved needed to be comfortable learning about these behaviours, and feel supported while doing so. I also needed to balance feedback from the client, and the counsellors we were working with - helping translate the creative and technical needs from team to client.

STOP NZ had a very successful launch and is being used by schools around the country, as well as being backed by the Ministry for Children, Oranga Tamariki.
